East Aurora Council of AFT / Local 604 Statement

We, the Executive Board and House of Delegates, stand in solidarity with the movement for black lives, as well as its efforts to realize justice, dignity, and equity for those who experience systemic racism and disadvantage within our country, our community and our district.

We condemn the senseless murder of George Floyd, as we do for all those who have similarly lost their lives, their bodily autonomy, their self-respect, or their livelihoods as a result of corruption, cruelty, or the indifference on the part of those empowered to serve and/or protect our precious communities.
We call for justice for George Floyd, his family, and his loved ones, which means not only holding those who participated in his death accountable to the highest degree, but reforming the systems which allow for these and similar outrageous offenses to occur.

We recognize that providing justice to all people — particularly people most affected by inequity — means not only criminal justice and police reform, but addressing larger systemic problems including poverty, as well as the lack of adequate community resources and infrastructure.
This past February, our East Aurora Local Council approved revisions to our union’s constitution. Article II included some important changes. Here is what it says:

Article II: The Purpose of the Organization Shall Be:
*To protect the best interests of children through sound educational advancement.
*To promote the general welfare of school employees represented by the East Aurora Council.
*To promote the highest standards of professional practices within the East Aurora Council.
*To encourage members to exercise their rights and privileges and to willingly accept leadership in civil affairs and community involvement.
*To promote the political awareness of members and other workers.
*To support legislation favorable to education and workers’ rights.

As staff and teachers of this community, we believe that silence is not an option, which means helping community efforts for justice; to uphold the voices of those speaking difficult truths, and, if needed, speaking alongside them; and to support legislation that improves the conditions of the students, families, and the community, whether at our schools, local government, or nationally.
We are seeing history unfold, but it is not enough to passively watch.

We are at a crossroads, and it is our hope that through this crucible of change, we forge an even deeper connection, and together find a path to a better future.

We want to listen. We want to know. Reach out to teachers and staff you trust and tell us your stories, fears, hopes, dreams, and suggestions.

We want to be a part of this change.

Declaración del Consejo de East Aurora AFT / Local 604 

La Junta Ejecutiva y la Cámara de Delegados del sindicato nos solidarizamos con el movimiento Black Lives Matter, así como con sus esfuerzos para alcanzar la justicia, dignidad, y equidad para todos aquellos que experimentan el racismo sistemático y sus desventajas en nuestro país, nuestra comunidad y nuestro distrito.  

Condenamos el asesinado sin sentido de George Floyd, así como todos los que han perdido sus vidas de forma similar, su movilidad, su auto respecto, o su sustento como resultado de la corrupción, crueldad, o la indiferencia por parte de aquellos que están en poder de servir y proteger nuestras valiosas comunidades.

Pedimos justicia para George Floyd, su familia, y sus seres queridos. Esto implica no solo hacer responsables y afrontar la máxima pena a los que participaron en su muerte, sino también reformar los sistemas que permiten estas acciones y similares ofensas que son tan indignantes, para que no se sigan produciendo.

Reconocemos que al proveer justicia para todas las personas – particularmente las personas más afectadas por la inequidad – significa no solo reformar la justicia criminal y la policía, sino abordar los problemas sistemáticos mayores como la pobreza, así como la falta de recursos comunitarios e infraestructuras adecuadas. 

Este pasado febrero, nuestro Consejo Local de East Aurora aprobó las revisiones de la constitución de nuestro sindicato. El Artículo II incluye algunos cambios importantes. Dice así: 

Articulo II: El propósito de la organización será: 

1. Proteger los mejores intereses de los niños usando los mejores avances en la educación.
2. Promover el bienestar general de los empleados escolares representados por el Consejo de East Aurora. 
3. Promover las prácticas profesionales de más alto estándar en el Consejo de East Aurora.   
4. Animar a los miembros a ejercitar sus derechos y privilegios y aceptar voluntariamente el liderazgo en asuntos civiles y participación en la comunidad. 
5. Promover la conciencia política de los miembros y otros trabajadores. 
6. Apoyar legislaciones favorables a la educación y los derechos de los trabajadores. 

Como personal, educadores y maestros de esta comunidad, creemos que el silencio no es una opción. Esto conlleva ayudar a los esfuerzos de la comunidad a alcanzar la justicia; también elevar las voces de aquellos que hablan de verdades dolorosas, y, si es necesario, hablar a su lado; y apoyar la legislación que mejore las condiciones de los estudiantes, sus familias, y la comunidad, tanto en nuestras escuelas, como a nivel de gobierno local o nacional. 

Se esta haciendo historia ante nuestros ojos, pero no es suficiente mirar pasivamente. 

Estamos ante una encrucijada, y es nuestra esperanza que, en este momento crucial de cambio, no olvidemos una conexión más profunda, que juntos, encontremos un camino a un futuro mejor.
