SCHOOL DISTRICT 131

July 16, 2020

Dear District 131 Staff,

We are spending many hours to develop a plan as appropriately as possible that will support our school community as we commence a new school year in the fall. To better prepare ourselves, we have met with other districts, met with the leaders of our parent organizations, surveyed parents, participated in webinars and have a PreK-12 fall planning committee, as well as keeping in mind specific programs (i.e. Special Education, Bilingual etc..) to provide all stakeholders the best possible plan to meet everyone’s needs.

We are aware of the necessary steps needed to care for and protect our students and staff. We have identified our medically fragile students and are looking at a process to communicate with our families, and via this communication, we are looking to find out who among our staff would fall into this category as well. We will be moving forward with the expectation that all district facilities adhere to safety measures consistent with guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) during the Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois Plan. While inside schools, staff and students will be required to wear appropriate face coverings, we will make every effort to adhere to 6ft social distancing, we will not permit gatherings of more than 50 individuals in one space; individuals will be required to conduct self-symptoms screening and temperature checks before entering school buildings, and there will be a school wide increase in cleaning and disinfection.

As we move ahead with plans for the fall, we feel it necessary to reach out to staff to assess those for which the above protective measures do not mitigate the increased risks of being medically fragile. Staff who have a condition identified by a physician as one of the CDC’s most high risk which include; People all ages who have serious underlying medical conditions (e.g. lung/kidney/liver disease, asthma, diabetes, heart conditions); People 65 years and older; People who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility; People who are immunocompromised (e.g. people undergoing cancer treatment, smoking, bone marrow or organ transplantation, immune deficiencies, poorly controlled HIV or AIDS, and prolonged use of corticosteroids and other immune weakening medications); People with severe obesity, a review of a physician’s report would be conducted on a case-by case basis to see if reasonable accommodations can be made. Employees should be aware of their needs and make their requests as soon as possible. This will allow the District and the staff the time to make all reasonable accommodations prior to the start of the school year. Human Resources will also meet with those whom an individual professional decision is made to resign or retire from your position.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in the start of our school year.
