After reviewing our constitution and Roberts Rules for Meetings, and consulting with Dan Mercer from the 604, we believe that there is no rightful winner of the treasurer position from this past election on May 20th. We are declaring this position vacant, and reverting back to the executive board to appoint a treasurer as their right as per our constitution for vacant positions.

The difficulty came in because none of the write in candidates received a majority of votes cast for that position. While our constitution does allow for a run off between the two top vote recipients, we believe the application of that section does not all together apply to this treasurer election in that one of the top vote recipients for that position was Jeff, and he withdrew to assume the presidency, which was the position he put in for originally. A run off for treasurer in this circumstance is also vague in application by forcing the definition of the top two vote recipients further down the write ins list for treasurer. We believe that reverting the appointment of a treasurer back to the executive board is clearly defined in the constitution, whereas certifying a write in candidate with less than majority vote is beyond the scope of the election committee’s power.

Lastly, we recommend that our constitution be reviewed in the sections that outline the elections and the election committee so as to avoid situations of ambiguity in future elections, thus ensuring that our elected officials reflect the majority of our membership’s views.
